.ABOUT LONG

Long was born in a refugee camp on the border of Thailand and Cambodia two years after his parents had fled from the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. At the age of five, Long and his parents immigrated to Australia where he received his primary, secondary and tertiary education.

.ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHY

Long has always been fascinated with all things mechanical so when he got his first SLR camera at the age of twelve, you would rarely see him in a photograph as he loved being behind the camera (though, as you can see to the right, he likes to have fun in front of the camera sometimes). At the age of 17, Long took up graphic design and discovered the amazing workflow potential of digital photography.

.ABOUT STYLE

The world of photography has an abundance of differing styles, from the photojournalistic approach of Henri Cartier-Bresson to the commercial/advertising portraiture of Annie Leibovitz. With so many creative styles of photography in the world, Long challenges himself to not be limited by a single style or trend, but to embrace all that he finds beautiful in the art of photography and make it his own. That's his style. Long does whatever it takes to get the best shot in any situation, whether that be directing for that fashion look or being invisible (not literally) and documenting the day.

.A FEW QUESTIONS FOR LONG

Q. How did you get into photography?
A.
I’m a geek at heart. When I first saw an SLR camera I loved all the dials and the buttons, the clicking it made when I took a picture and the whirring when the film rewound. I loved learning what each little thing did and the excitement of seeing the developed prints of my experiments.

Q. How did you get started photographing weddings?
A.
Since I loved photography, I would take my camera out to any and every event I attended and soon friends would say “Hey, you’re a photographer and I need someone to photograph my wedding. So, how about it?” and so from there friends would recommend me to their friends.

Q. How do you approach a wedding?
A.
There are two ways in which I approach every wedding. The first and foremost is from the standpoint of when the day is over, that’s it, you can’t relive that moment, ever. All that’s left are memories, and that’s what I need to capture. I need to take pictures that speak more than a thousand words, I need to take pictures that capture emotions, moods and moments that just can’t even be described with words alone. I want pictures that ignite memories.

The second approach is from the standpoint of just having fun. Organising and preparing a wedding is so darn stressful so why can’t the day itself be full of fun? It’s a day to celebrate a new beginning together so why not encourage the couple to play as if they were children again, without a care in the world and just having fun!
